Bio

Amy Vowles is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Magandjin (Brisbane), originally from Gimuy (Cairns). Informed by her connection to the coastal and wetland environments of Far North Queensland (FNQ), her practice explores the psychological experience of place through biomorphic forms suggestive of intertidal and internal landscapes. Working across painting, sculpture, projected moving image and immersive installation, Vowles investigates the shared instability of place and the self through materially driven, intuitive and site-responsive processes.

Drawing upon personal and collective experiences of the natural disasters recurrent to FNQ, Vowles combines organic matter such as dirt and sand with industrial and found materials including brick, rope, wire, plaster bandage and refuse. Through these contrasts, her work investigates vulnerability, resilience and recovery while reflecting the surreal realities of living at the edge of the climate crisis.
