Bio

Amy Vowles is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in Magandjin from Gimuy (Cairns). Inspired by her upbringing and connection to the coastal and wetland landscapes of Far North Queensland, her practice playfully weaves personal narrative and the psyche into biomorphic form evocative of intertidal and psychological landscapes. Her work captures the transience of place by morphing her painting practice into mixed media sculpture, projected moving image and immersive installation.

Drawing from personal and communal lived experience of natural disasters common to her hometown in FNQ, Vowles juxtaposes energetic line, natural materials of clustered dirt and sand with brick, rope, wire, plaster bandage and refuse to explore ideas of security, vulnerability and recovery. Her vibrant and semi-representational visual language illustrates the surreal reality of living on edges of the climate crisis.
