Balancing Act (II)

Installation combing projected moving image, bricks and mixed media sculpture

Presented at Analog - A group exhibited by Scrap Haus ARI (2026)

Balancing Act presents a precarious landscape combining fractured analog and digital video documentation of Brisbane flooding events from 1973 to 2022; juxtaposed with found backyard bricks and mixed media sculptures. Drawing from communal and personal experience of living in Brisbane flood plain suburbs, Vowles bandages and balances biomorphic clusters of waste material onto makeshift brick structures to investigate false senses of security and recovery post flood event. By highlighting communal experience of loss associated with Brisbane flooding events, Balancing Act explores the unequal experience of extreme weather events in a climate change world. The poses the question; why is housing security conditional to economic privledge?
