Automatic Charismatic is the first automatic drawing created by the artist, where Vowles became a medium for spirit to draw looped pathways of flowing sharp lines. The energy generated during this process resulted in the inducement of a trance-like state. Vowles continued developing the composition to indicate the relationship between the unconscious and the ethereal, symbolised by the use of the eye motif and energetic lines.

Exchanging Energy is an abstract painting that embodies an open dialogue with spirit, experienced by the artist via the process of automatic drawing. Created during a meditational state, Vowles was able to become a medium to channel and transfer energy onto the canvas. The energy governing this automatic process manifests as bold, spiralling gestural lines and biomorphic feminine forms that reflect both the artist’s inner psyche and the mystical unknown.
Automatic Rainbow (2022), acrylic, aerosol on canvas, 70cm x 50cm
Automatic Rainbow is informed by the process and experience of automatism. This process involved the artist chaotically making marks with mixed media onto the canvas without rational thinking, resulting in the inducement of a trance-like state. The visual imagery evokes the ecstatic experience of automatism, manifesting as a vibrant abstract visual language.
Burst (2022), acrylic paint on canvas, 70cm x 50cm
Burst is an abstract painting informed by the process of automatic drawing. The sharp spiralling lines visually indicate the paths of energy that guided the automatic drawing without any control of the artist. Following this process, Vowles refined these marks to reveal abstract forms that embody a dialogue between the unconscious and the ethereal. The circular orb-like form is a reoccurring motif of Vowles’ work that symbolises an infinite metaphysical source of life, emphasised by the use of warm radiant colours and gold.
Eye Divination (2021), acrylic paint on canvas, 1.5m x 1.5m
Eye Divination (2021) presents an infinitely expanding field of eye forms that encourage introspection of self and the metaphysical through optical illusions and scared symbolism. Clusters of biomorphic blue eyes appear as a mystical entity, floating and contrasting against a red background of shifting colours. The blue eyes offer voids for self-reflection, connecting the self to the spiritual via sacred evil eye symbolism and the metaphysical experience of colourful light.
